Photos: Death toll from market bombing rises to 7

The death toll has risen to 7 after a car bomb struck a busy vegetable market in Mogadishu on Saturday noon. Al Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the deadly attack.

The explosion, which has rocked the market, was the result of a car packed with explosives that was parked along the Afisyoni road, which is often used by government motorcades.

An eyewitness, told Radio Shabelle over that the blast has sent a thick plume of black smoke into the sky, and smashed the marketplace and nearby buildings.

“A vehicle blew up at 12:30 a.m. at a parking lot next to the bust vegetable market known as Suuqa Beerta in Waberi district in Mogadishu,” the witness said.

Reports said the car bomb was aimed to target a presidential convoy carrying president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud who was a nearby university building at the time of the blast.
